JULIE MORGAN is holding her 16th annual Macmillan Coffee Morning at Miss Jones on Merthyr Road in Whitchurch on October 7 – and this year will mark the occasion in memory of her friend and long-time Macmillan fundraiser, Rob Cooper, who sadly passed away in July.

Since starting the annual coffee morning in 2000 Rob (pictured below, centre) helped Julie Morgan raise more than £12,000 for Macmillan with the annual coffee mornings. The Assembly Member for Cardiff North began her long association with Rob Cooper, who lived in Whitchurch opposite her constituency office, when she first became a candidate in the Cardiff North constituency in 1992.

As well as campaigning on behalf of Julie Morgan, Rob also served as a Whitchurch Primary, Ysgol Melin Gruffydd and Whitchurch High School governor and worked to raise money for numerous charities including Vision 21 and the Welsh Kidney Patients Association as well as Macmillan. The annual coffee morning in Whitchurch – this year being held at Miss Jones – was one of the highlights of his year.

Julie said: "Rob was a great friend and support to me over so many years. He had such a rich life and so many interests and friends. He never let the fact that he was in a wheelchair confine him and even when he was quite ill last year he was still organising charity events.

"It was tragic that illness took him from his friends this summer and I think, since he put so much work into this event in previous years, it is only fitting that we should pause and think of Rob at the coffee morning this year. "

Julie added: "We hope as many people as possible will come along to the coffee morning. Although we will be remembering Rob, possibly with some of the Beatles tracks which he was so fond of, of course the event is open to all. Please drop in between 9.30 and midday for a chat, a coffee break and to help a great cause.
